Population

PEOPLE IN BULGARIA

According to the latest population census,  the number of Bulgaria\'s population has been found to be 8 487 317.

Most of Bulgarian population lives in cities. More than a million and a half people live in the capital Sofia, which is approximately one fifth of the entire population. There are many ethnic groups living in Bulgaria as a consequence of its historical and geographical peculiarities. The largest minority is Turkish and the Gypsies population. Some of the other minorities living in Bulgaria are the Armenians, Greeks, Jews, Romanians and Albanians.  All of these ethnic groups live in harmony with the Bulgarians without any social or ethnic pressure.

The Bulgarian language belongs to the group of the Slavic languages. Russian and Serbo-Croatian are the most similar languages to it. There are very few words of Thracian origin in the language, which have entered mainly through Greeks.
